Community Education & Outreach Services

This component of FSAWV specializes in innovative family building programs.

Community Education and Outreach Services offer the following programs:

The Parent Child Home Program
This is a proven home based literacy and parenting program
serving families of toddlers with limited access to educational
opportunities.

The program provides families with 2 and 3 year old children
twice weekly home visits.

The Home Visitors model play and interactions for children and
parents together.

The Parent Child Home Program is funded by the PA Department
of Public Welfare

Parent of Preschoolers
Parents of Preschoolers is an informal prevention and educational group for parents of young children addressing the ages and stages of child development. 

Discussion addresses developmental states, behavioral norms, parental values, parent/child communication, positive discipline and sensitive issues, such as bereavement.

Second Step Program
The Second Step Program introduces children grades Kindergarten through sixth grade to a safe conflict resolution classroom curriculum that encourages skill development in empathy, impulse control and anger management.

During the curriculum, children share experiences, learn new non-violent conflict resolution techniques and have an opportunity to role play those techniques.

Wyoming County Housing Authority Community Outreach
This program provides on-site casework activities to assist
individuals and families residing in the facilities and rental
properties of the Wyoming County Housing Authority.

The program promotes the acquisition of skills and knowledge
needed to be more successful in family and community life.

Activities of the program include reading hours for children,
service linkages for adults and the development of community
gardens.

Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS)
PATHS is a collaborative venture with Penn State University, Penn State Cooperative Extension and the Wilkes-Barre Area School District for students in grades Kindergarten through fifth that enhances school and social success.

The program facilitates children's skill development in four areas:  positive peer relations; self-control and responsible behavior; communication and conflict management and problem solving.

Ultimately PATHS focuses on creating a pleasant classroom environment where more learning can take place.

Tobacco Prevention and Control
This program has community based goals and school based goals.

The community based program goals are:
- Identify assets available in the service area that support
community based tobacco prevention and cessation programs.
- Identify experts who represent the diversity of the service area
to assist in developing partnerships with various community based
organizations and provide oversight in the implementation of a
comprehensive tobacco control program.
- Significantly reduce exposure to tobacco smoke pollution in common locations such as day care centers, restaurants, public spaces, worksites, sports arenas, schools and shopping centers.
- This part of the program is administered in Luzerne County.

The school based program goals are:
- Establish a working relationship with school administrators and teachers to support, develop and implement tobacco-free policies, evidence-based tobacco prevention curricula and cessation programs.
- Identify parent organizations to assist with tobacco prevention education, advocacy and outreach.
- This part of the program is administered in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties.
