Family Service Association of Wyoming Valley Monday, September 8th, Family Service Association of Wyoming Valley (FSAWV) will celebrate 113 years of service to the community. The celebration will take place at this year’s Annual Meeting which will take place at the East Mountain Inn, Rte. 115, Wilkes Barre at noon. In 1895 a number of distinguished Wyoming Valley citizens met and created United Charities with the mission to coordinate the charitable work of the community. In 1938, United Charities committed its family service program to the Family Service movement, changing its name to the Family Service Association of Wyoming Valley with the primary focus of counseling service for families. In 1972, FSAWV instituted Help Line, a 24-hour / 7 day a week telephone information and referral service. In collaboration with United Way of Wyoming Valley, Greater Hazleton United Way, United Way Wyoming County, and United Way of PA, Help Line is a part of the State’s efforts to develop 211 in Pennsylvania. In the 1990’s, FSAWV initiated a Guardianship service for adults, and expanded its school-based prevention services. Recently, FSAWV has introduced the Parent-Child-Home Program literacy and school success program; community advocacy initiatives assisting disabled individuals in our community; and, the Family Visitation Service to support contact between non-custodial parents and their children. During this past year, we joined Luzerne County Children & Youth Services in developing the Family Group Decision Making practice model.
